Uniworld vs Scenic - Which Luxury Cruise Line Is Better?

Having returned from a superb 8 day Scenic river cruise last Sunday, and previously cruised with Uniworld (although several years ago - which reminds me, I must book another soon!), I finally feel able to properly compare the two.

It’s a difficult decision because both offer a genuinely ultra-luxury river cruise experience, with beautiful ships, excellent service, fine dining and immersive itineraries.

But only one can come out on top.

So, if you’re wondering whether Uniworld or Scenic is the better choice for your next river cruise, here’s my honest, first hand opinion.

Where Are They Similar?

Let’s start with what they both do really well.

Both Uniworld and Scenic offer:

  • Luxury, all-inclusive river cruising

  • Beautifully designed ships

  • High standards of service

  • Excellent food and wines

  • Included excursions with additional exclusive events

  • Spacious cabins and suites

  • Relaxed, adult-focused atmospheres

  • A much more intimate experience than ocean cruising

Both lines attract travellers looking for comfort, ease and a more refined style of travel.

Whichever you choose, you’re going to have a wonderful holiday.

But there are differences, and those differences will matter depending on the kind of traveller you are.

The Ships & Style

This is where the two lines immediately feel quite different.

Uniworld

Uniworld ships are elegant, opulent and full of character. Think boutique hotel meets classic European luxury.

I love how each ship has its own individual destination-inspired style, for example, the Joie de Vivre, which travels from Paris along the Seine, features a very cute and intimate French-style bistro café.

Additionally, the ships are decorated with rich fabrics, artwork, chandeliers and plenty of personality. Some travellers absolutely love this more traditional, lavish feel.

It feels luxurious in a very classic sense.

Scenic

Scenic feels more contemporary and understated.

The ships are sleek, calm and modern, with neutral tones and a more spacious feel throughout. Personally, I found Scenic incredibly relaxing and stylish without ever feeling formal. I never once felt under-dressed, or having the need to dress-up, only if you wanted to.

If you prefer modern luxury hotels over classic grand hotels, Scenic may suit you better.

The Cabins

Both offer very comfortable accommodation. The Scenic cabins felt well designed, with clever use of space and their signature balcony system working brilliantly in all weather.

Uniworld cabins are beautiful and full of character, with luxurious bedding and marble finished bathrooms, with heated floors, towel rails, and rain showers.

Food & Dining

This is always subjective because everyone’s tastes are different, but honestly, both were excellent.

On both lines, the food was locally sourced, fresh, beautifully presented and reflective of the destinations visited.

Both offer a varied buffet breakfast and lunch, while dinner is a’la carte. There are plenty of options, with “specials of the day”, plus “the usuals,” which may be steak, fish, lasagne, etc.

Neither disappointed.

Excursions & Included Experiences

Both cruise lines include a very good range of excursions, and this is one of the joys of river cruising - simply stepping off the ship and exploring.

Walking tours, cultural experiences, wine tastings and local guides are all part of the experience.

Scenic perhaps offers slightly more choice in some destinations, particularly with their Scenic Freechoice programme, which gives guests flexibility depending on interests and activity levels.

Scenic power-assisted bikes for exploring independently or with a tour. Uniworld has these too.

Atmosphere Onboard

This may ultimately be the deciding factor for many people.

Uniworld

  • Elegant

  • Traditional luxury

  • Boutique hotel feel

  • Slightly more formal atmosphere, but not stuffy

Scenic

  • Contemporary luxury

  • Relaxed and calm

  • Modern design

  • Quiet sophistication

Service

Service on both lines was genuinely excellent.

Warm, attentive and professional without ever feeling intrusive.

One thing I particularly loved about Scenic was how naturally relaxed the service felt. While it was always professional, it was also fun. You could really feel that everybody onboard loved their jobs. It is more than their job, it is their life.

That balance is harder to achieve than people realise.

So… Which Is Better?

Truthfully, there is no bad choice here.

If you love classic elegance, rich décor and a more traditional luxury feel, Uniworld could be perfect for you.

If you love contemporary design, and a relaxed atmosphere, Scenic could come out on top.

My Honest Advice

Don’t choose purely based on brochures or marketing photos.

Think about your own travel style.

Do you prefer:

  • Classic or contemporary?

  • Formal or relaxed?

  • Character or simplicity?

  • Boutique opulence or understated luxury?

That’s usually what determines which line you’ll enjoy most.

Final Thoughts

River cruising is one of the most relaxing, immersive and rewarding ways to travel, and both Scenic and Uniworld do it exceptionally well.

The good news is there isn’t really a wrong choice, only the one that feels most like you.

So who wins for me?

Neither. They offer totally different styles, and I genuinely loved both style of cruising.

Do you think I have chickened out?
