Beyond the Brand: Does Viking Really Offer the Best Value in Luxury Cruising?

Viking is an exceptional cruise line, there's no denying that. But what is it that makes them so well known?

A big part of the answer is marketing. Viking invests heavily in advertising and has built one of the most recognisable brands in the cruise industry. Rather than relying on travel agents, they focus on selling directly to consumers, working with only a select number of agency partners.

When I lived in Canada and worked for Cruise Holidays (the same company I continue to work with in the UK, now trading as Distinctive Journeys), clients would often come to me asking specifically for a Viking river cruise. Naturally, I would ask what had drawn them to the brand. More often than not, the answer wasn't a recommendation from friends or family or a previous sailing, it was simply that they had seen the advertising.

I would always price the requested Viking itinerary, but I couldn't help noticing a familiar pattern. The advertised fare would often appear to be heavily discounted, with a much higher original price prominently crossed out. However, when I compared the actual selling price with other premium river cruise lines, the costs were usually remarkably similar.

This gave me the opportunity to look beyond the brand name and focus on value and experience. More often than not, I would recommend an alternative river cruise line that offered a more inclusive product, exceptional service, and an experience I genuinely believed would better suit my clients' expectations. While Viking delivers an excellent holiday, I found that other river cruise lines often provided even greater value and a more refined onboard experience for a comparable investment.

Curious to see how the numbers stacked up, I spent some time comparing the prices of popular river cruise itineraries from Viking and Scenic. Given Viking's reputation for value and Scenic's position as an ultra-luxury brand, the results weren't what I expected…and I suspect they'll surprise you too.

Of course, Viking is no longer just a river cruise specialist. Since my days in Canada, they have successfully expanded into the ocean cruise market, creating a fleet of elegant, destination-focused ships that appeal to travellers looking for a sophisticated yet approachable luxury experience.

There's no question that they have produced an excellent product. But as with their river cruises, I wanted to look beyond the marketing and compare what travellers actually receive for their investment.

Comparing ocean cruises is a little more challenging than river cruises, as no two cruise lines are exactly alike. However, by selecting similar itineraries and voyage lengths, I was able to make a meaningful comparison between Viking's luxury offering and Regent Seven Seas' ultra-luxury experience.

The results were fascinating…and they may just change the way you think about the true cost of luxury cruising.

The Bottom Line

Viking has earned its reputation as one of the world's best-known cruise brands, and for many travellers it delivers an exceptional holiday. Their ships are beautiful, their itineraries are thoughtfully designed, and their marketing has undoubtedly introduced countless people to the world of river and ocean cruising.

But brand recognition and value are not always the same thing.

After comparing popular itineraries across both river and ocean cruising, one thing became clear: the price difference between Viking and genuinely luxury or ultra-luxury cruise lines is often far smaller than many people expect. In some cases, it's virtually non-existent.

That's why I always encourage my clients to look beyond the name they see in an advert. The right cruise isn't necessarily the one with the biggest marketing budget, it's the one that best matches your travel style, expectations, and desired level of inclusions and service.

As a luxury cruise specialist, my role isn't to sell one particular brand. It's to understand what's important to you and match you with the cruise line that offers the best overall experience and value for your investment.

Sometimes that will be Viking. But very often, you'll discover there's an even better option waiting to be explored.

Unfortunately, as Viking is primarily trade-only, I do not have access to official imagery, so I have used AI-generated visuals for illustration purpose.
