Life Is Suite
For the world’s most discerning travellers, luxury cruising is no longer simply about where a ship sails, it’s about how you live while on board.
Why do I recommend veranda staterooms & suites?
Some travellers say they only use their stateroom to sleep, but I believe the world’s finest suites are designed for so much more than that. These extraordinary spaces become a private sanctuary at sea; somewhere to slow down, reconnect, and escape the noise of everyday life, while still enjoying the exceptional dining, facilities, and destinations each voyage offers.
Enjoy your private ocean view every day, with a cuppa in the morning, or a glass of bubbles in the evening. Order room service and enjoy a romantic meal for two on your private balcony, with the ocean as your backdrop.
There is nothing better!
On river cruises
The same applies really. The windows on the lower deck give views of the water only & the ducks bobbing along. Imagine opening up your shutters in a Parisian hotel, and immediately being at one with everything the city has to offer; the hustle & bustle, the thrill, the views...This is what a balcony stateroom or suite gives you from your cruise ship, which docks in a central location along the river; In Paris - Next to the Eiffel Tower. In Budapest - Next to the Chain bridge...etc...
Today’s ultra-luxury cruise lines have transformed their top suites into floating penthouses, private spas, and designer residences that rival the finest hotels in Paris, New York, or Dubai. With wraparound terraces, personal butlers, Steinway pianos, private saunas, in-suite spas, and even dedicated fitness rooms overlooking the ocean, surely these suites offer better accommodation than any hotel on land?
While I haven’t personally experienced every suite featured here, I have completed extensive specialist training across each of these luxury cruise lines. This allows me to offer expert, up-to-date guidance to help you choose the suite, and the onboard experience, that best matches your travel style, preferences, and expectations.
These are the most extraordinary suites at sea right now.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises – The Skyview Regent Suite
If there is a reigning monarch of luxury at sea, Regent Seven Seas Cruises may currently hold the crown.
Launching aboard Seven Seas Prestige in 2026, the new Skyview Regent Suite is set to become the largest all-inclusive ultra-luxury cruise suite ever created, spanning an astonishing 8,794 square feet across two levels.
The suite is less a cabin and more a private residence at sea. Highlights include:
Two bedrooms and two-and-a-half marble bathrooms
A private gym, sauna, and massage room
A floating stone staircase and private in-suite elevator
Over 3,700 square feet of wraparound balcony space
Personal butler service
Private car and driver in every port
Even Regent’s existing Regent Suite aboard Seven Seas Grandeur, Splendor, and Explorer remains one of the most coveted accommodations afloat. At more than 4,400 square feet, it features rare artwork, a private spa retreat, and a handcrafted bed, worth thousands of dollars.
This is luxury cruising at its most extravagant.
I am attending an organised ship tour of Regent Seven Seas Voyager in August, so will be sure to post photos
Seabourn – The Grand Wintergarden Suite
Seabourn has long been synonymous with understated elegance, and nowhere is this more evident than in the Grand Wintergarden Suites.
Available across the Seabourn fleet, these suites are designed like sophisticated contemporary apartments with a distinctly residential feel. The signature feature is the glass-enclosed solarium complete with soaking tub and daybed, which is perfect for private relaxation while watching the ocean drift by.
Guests enjoy:
Expansive wraparound windows
Dining space for entertaining
Personal suite stewardess service
Complimentary spa amenities
Priority access and VIP treatment throughout the voyage
Unlike some ultra-opulent suites that lean heavily into extravagance, Seabourn delivers a quieter, more refined form of luxury, which is sophisticated rather than showy.
Although I haven’t been fortunate enough to stay in this suite, I was lucky to take photos while on an organised ship tour of Seabourn Ovation.
Silversea – The Otium Suite
Silversea’s Otium Suite aboard Silver Nova and Silver Ray represents the line’s modern evolution into contemporary luxury.
Inspired by the indulgence of ancient Roman leisure culture, the Otium concept centres around wellness, relaxation, and space. The suite combines sleek Italian-inspired design with panoramic ocean views and an enormous private terrace complete with whirlpool.
Inside, guests can expect:
A spacious living and dining area
Walk-in wardrobe
Marble bathroom with whirlpool bath
Dedicated butler service
Included spa experiences
Private outdoor lounging and dining spaces
Silversea also excels in personalised service. Many repeat luxury cruisers argue that the line offers one of the most intuitive crew-to-guest experiences at sea, with staff often remembering guests’ preferences from previous sailings.
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises – Grand Penthouse Suite
For travellers who value exclusivity over visibility, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises remains one of luxury travel’s best-kept secrets.
The German luxury line, which now also sells to UK guests, is renowned for exceptional service standards, highly sophisticated clientele, and beautifully spacious accommodations.
Its Grand Penthouse Suites feature minimalist contemporary design, expansive oceanfront terraces, and highly personalised service. Unlike larger luxury ships, Hapag-Lloyd’s experience feels deeply private and discreet, closer to a boutique yacht than a traditional cruise ship.
For many seasoned luxury travellers, Hapag-Lloyd represents “quiet luxury” at sea in its purest form.
I recently did an organised ship tour on Hapag-Lloyd Explora II, and was absolutely blown away by the feeling of spaciousness, with wide hallways & large staterooms, with the ‘smallest’ lead-in veranda measuring 376 sq ft.
Here are some pictures I took of the Grand Penthouse Suite
Other Exceptional Suites Worth Knowing
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection – Owner’s Suite
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection brings private yacht aesthetics into the cruise world, with beautifully designed residential-style suites featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, expansive terraces, and highly personalised service.
Explora Journeys – Owner’s Residence
Explora Journeys has quickly become one of the most talked-about new luxury brands. Its Owner’s Residence offers sweeping forward-facing ocean views, private whirlpools, butler service, and a sleek European residential design aesthetic.
Putting a spanner in the works
While not situated in the Ultra-luxury cruise bracket, Oceania absolutely competes on space, design, and residential comfort.
Their newer ships, Vista and Allura, have elevated the suite experience significantly. The Owner’s Suites on Oceania Allura are enormous; around 2,200–2,400 square feet, with full-beam layouts, expansive verandas, spa-style bathrooms, dining areas, and highly residential interiors.
Oceania includes far less in the base fare, so the luxury feels more “country club” than “private yacht.”
That said, many seasoned cruisers genuinely prefer Oceania suites because:
The ships feel relaxed and sophisticated
Dining is arguably among the best at sea
Suites are exceptionally livable
The atmosphere is less formal
Pricing can be dramatically better value than Regent or Silversea
And honestly, for many affluent repeat cruisers, Oceania hits a sweet spot between premium and ultra-luxury that feels more relaxed and authentic than some of the more overtly lavish lines.
I have recently done an organised ship tour on Oceania Vista, although sadly we didn’t see the Owners suite (Although so close, the residents had boarded just minutes beforehand), here are a few photos I took of two different suite types; Oceania Suite and Vista Suite
