There is something quite magical about Europe at Christmas.
The lights, the markets, the smell of cinnamon and mulled wine, beautifully decorated squares and the sound of Christmas music drifting through the streets.
But visiting several Christmas markets independently can involve quite a lot of organisation; different hotels, trains, transfers, luggage and trying to work out how to get from one city to the next.
This is where a Christmas Markets river cruise comes into its own.

Why I love the idea of a Christmas Markets river cruise
For me, one of the biggest attractions is effortless exploration. You don't have to wake up wondering how you're going to get to the next destination, drag your suitcase onto another train, or check into another hotel every couple of nights.
Instead, you can enjoy breakfast onboard, head ashore to explore, return to the warmth of your ship and know that everything is taken care of. This is a much better way to travel in winter!
After spending a few hours exploring a Christmas market in the cold, and perhaps snow too, returning to a beautifully decorated ship for a hot shower followed by a gourmet meal, a glass of wine, and some low-key entertainment is a perfect way to end the day.
Here are a few of the most popular Christmas market cities:
Budapest: Start with a little Hungarian magic
Budapest is a wonderful place to begin a Christmas Markets journey. I fell in love with Budapest on my first river cruise. The city surprised me with its modern amenities, historic bullet-holed castle, and its tear-jerking past.
Budapest takes on a completely different atmosphere in winter, with festive lights illuminating the streets and squares and Christmas markets filled with handmade crafts, traditional food and plenty of warming drinks.
Look out for kürtőskalács, or chimney cake; a sweet Hungarian treat cooked over a spit and coated in sugar and often cinnamon or other toppings.
And then there's the backdrop. Grand buildings, and the Danube river flowing under the beautiful Chain Bridge (which you dock right beside, by the way), which links Buda & Pest. Sitting along side the river is the parliament buildings, which at night, are all lit up, casting its light across the river.
Little luxury tip: Don't rush back to the ship. Christmas markets often become even more atmospheric once the sun goes down and the lights come on.
Vienna – Christmas with an imperial touch
Then there's Vienna, which is another firm favourite city of mine. My husband and I cycled around this city, with bikes from the ship, but perhaps you won’t want to do this if there’s snow on the ground?
If Budapest feels atmospheric, Vienna brings a little more elegance to the experience.
The city's famous Christmas markets appear in some spectacular settings, including grand palaces and historic squares.
Expect wooden market stalls, festive decorations, roasted chestnuts, warming Glühwein and plenty of Austrian treats, which are yummy, but also very calorific, but they count for two reasons: 1) You’re on holiday, and 2) It’s Christmas!
And, of course, Vienna is a classical music lovers dream. Scenic, Uniworld, & Tauck often stay overnight in Vienna, enabling you to explore the markets, & magnificent palaces by day, and then enjoying an exclusive private after-hours concert by night, which is amazing by the way, and I’m not even really into classical music.
Salzburg is another amazing city you will visit on this cruise, which I found more spectacularly beautiful, and more quaint than Vienna.
Sometimes the best travel experiences are about how long you have to enjoy where you are.
Germany – Where the Christmas Market tradition really comes alive
Cologne, Rudesheim & Heidelberg - Germany is THE place to go if you want Christmas markets, and no two markets are quite the same; some are large and spectacular, while others are much smaller and feel wonderfully traditional. This is why a river cruise works, because you are able to visit the large city markets, and meander through village square markets, with the locals, without having to plan on getting between the two.
Many of the traditions we now associate with European Christmas markets have deep roots in German-speaking Europe, and visiting them in their original setting is really an experience.

Lebkuchen
Pretzels and regional specialities
Nutcrackers and wooden Christmas figures
Warming Glühwein
That's one of the things I love about exploring Europe this way, you're experiencing different towns, traditions and cultures along the way.
Amsterdam – Finish among the canals
Amsterdam in winter has its own charm, with twinkling lights reflected in the canals, cosy cafés and plenty of opportunities to explore beyond the traditional Christmas markets, and if you're lucky enough to be there during the city's famous light displays, the canals provide a spectacular backdrop.
Don't forget to try an oliebol; a traditional Dutch doughnut-like treat that's particularly popular around the festive season.
And there's another Dutch tradition worth knowing about...Sinterklaas.
Top tip: While Christmas is celebrated in the Netherlands, Sinterklaas is an important part of the Dutch festive season and traditionally takes place on 5 December. River cruises generally start in the last week of November, when the markets start opening up, so you’ll be able to fit this in, as well as your Christmas shopping before the rush starts.
It's a lovely reminder that even though we're all celebrating the same festive season, Christmas traditions can be wonderfully different from one country to another.
Other amazing Christmas market destinations you can visit by river, include; France - Strasbourg, & of course, Paris, Bratislava, and Belgium - Ghent, Bruges, Brussels & Antwerp.
And then there's the luxury...
Of course, not all Christmas Markets river cruises are created equal, and this is where choosing the right cruise line and ship matters.
On a luxury river cruise such as Scenic, Uniworld, or Tauck, the experience isn't just about getting from A to B, but it's about the experience onboard too.
Think beautifully designed suites, lounges, restaurants, and spas, excellent food and wine, included excursions, private tours & experiences, attentive service, and the luxury of having someone else take care of the details.
And personally, that's how I love to travel. It’s all-included, so all you have to do is enjoy your Christmas holiday experience, without worrying about the bill at the end.
Luxury shouldn't mean formal or stuffy, which it doesn’t. It'‘s relaxing, laid-back, fun, and means you have more time to enjoy yourself and fewer things to worry about. Just get on the ship, and switch off.

A Christmas Markets journey I'd happily recommend
